Should You Blame Your Bad Shots On Your Clubs?
We've all seen guys bang clubs on the ground or even throw them after a bad shots. The truth is most of the time
your bad shots are caused by swing faults not your golf clubs. However sometimes bad shots can actually be caused
(or aggravated) by your golf club.
Harry Lundberg, AccuSwing.com's master club fitter had an interesting case recently. I've reproduced Harry's letter
(see below) to me regarding this golfer. I think we can all learn something from this letter.
Harry is professional engineer who has consulted in the golf industry for many years. He holds numerous golf
patents and has designed many top golf clubs including probably the best selling golf club of all time. He has
worked with tour pro's from the PGA, LPGA and Senior PGA. Harry's contact information can be found on our
SimpleGolf.com's instructors page. http://www.simplegolf.com/coachespro.htm
Harry is located on the scenic shoreline of Eastern Connecticut. If you are ever vacationing in the Groton, Mystic,
or New London areas of Connecticut, a stop to see Harry would likely be a highlight of your trip. At the range
(right off I-95) where Harry teaches, he always has a full rack of clubs there for you to try out. Harry is a
master Symple Swing instructor as well having been involved in the early development of Symple Swing.
If you do need any clubs take a look at what we have to offer at www.AccuSwing.com . Harry personally puts together every club to the golfers specific
needs. If you are looking for any clubs (drivers, woods or irons) you can fill our club fitting form and get
a personalized club fitting recommendation from Harry. Using the club fitting form Harry can personally fit

quote:
Dear Joe,
Yesterday I had David W, a Symple Swinger from Foxboro, MA come to me for a hands on lesson. He had started
with the DVD's, did all right initially, and then had fallen apart. He was ready to give up the game and was
desperate.
1- He is well coordinated so natural ability was not the problem.
2- It soon became apparent that he could not tilt his upper body back such that his nose was over his right
thigh. His visual optic was all off. So we had him stand a little more erect with the right eye over the inside
of his right thigh.
3- On the irons his ball position was way too far forward. This was not easily corrected - the eye perspective
kept getting in the way. But he finally came around after hitting a couple of dozen balls.
The grip was "too strong" at 3 o'clock. His irons went low right and his woods went low left in a huge hook. We
moved his left thumb to about 1:30 and bingo, he hit the irons crisply, long and straight. In fact, he hit a 3
iron for the first time in his life. His scooping disappeared and he was able to pinch the ball against the
turf with a proper divot. By the way his irons are Ping with a stiff graphite shaft and they fit him well.
4- He has Adams fairway clubs with a firm steel shaft (these clubs not quite as stiff as his irons). Here we
left the left thumb at 1;30 but we rotated the right hand to a much weaker position - just about noon. That did
the trick. The ball went high, long and straight. As you can see the equipment had much influence over what we
did. When there is a poor fit in any of the clubs, in this case the woods, you simply have to change things to
suit.
5- The driver was impossible. It is a Ping knock off with an R shaft. I had in stock our large Magnum XL 550
460 cc driver with a stiff Rapid Fire shaft and a Lamkin 3/32" over grip. When he hit that club the same way as
the Adams woods he transformed his shots completely - long, good launch angle and straight. He bought my club
on the spot and went home happy. So happy indeed that his father is coming s down on Saturday for lessons and a
fitting.
The point of this story is that when clubs are ill fitting it is very difficult to get the player to properly
swing. I'm lucky, having a large inventory at the range. You will want to watch for this - I run into it quite
frequently.
